warming the mother

I am not sure about you, but I remember the first few months of my babies' lives with mixed emotions. I was learning all these new skills with a very empty tank following a 9 month long pregnancy, a healthy strong labour, beginning breastfeeding, very little sleep and nowhere near enough nutrition. It was a joyous time, but I was seriously DEPLETED and exhausted. If I had my time again, I would get my tired little butt into a TCM practitioner and got some herbs into me and enjoy the benefits of a 'Mother Warming' treatment.

Mother warming is a treatment given to women in their postpartum time to support recovery from the labours of birth and pregnancy, it also helps to replenish energy, and support a healthy milk supply. This beautiful and beneficial treatment is usually done as part of the Chinese Tradition of “Sitting the Month". This is a system of postpartum recovery involving a full month of staying in bed, nutritional recommendations, and herbal supplements. While that does sound a bit unrealistic, postpartum recovery is often overlooked in planning for a new baby and women are praised for “bouncing back” quickly, but this can come at an overall cost to health and wellbeing and we believe there is something to be gleaned from revisiting this tradition, modernising it, and making it your own.

The process of mother warming is very simple: Moxa (dried mugwort) is burned near the skin and warms specific acupuncture points to support the healing process and it feels absolutely wonderful to the mother receiving it. Mother warming is typically done at least once in the days and weeks after birth and often continued throughout the postpartum time.

If this sounds like something you, or someone you love, would benefit from, Jenny and I are very experienced in postpartum recovery treatments, so you are in good hands.
