Making Healthy Habits Stick

Petra Joly

Well hello Spring, it’s so nice to see you…

With the days getting longer and the weather on the improve, it's the perfect time to make some healthy lifestyle changes or dive into that new wellness routine you've been waiting to try. BUT we all know that sticking to these routines is sometimes easier said than done so I thought I'd share some helpful tips on creating new habits that actually stick.

1. Focus on one thing at a time. Start simple, and prioritise consistency. Even if you can only manage a 15-minute walk, it's a great place to start and from there you can keep kicking goals with small improvements.

2. You don't have to be perfect! We all have to start somewhere and often taking that first step can feel like a scary leap so be proud of yourself for starting. Self-compassion is key here.

3. Make sure it's do-able. If you're trying to make it to a 6pm class but you don't finish work until 5:30 and you often have to work late, try to find a class that could be more achievable and a better fit for your circumstances.

4. Don’t fixate on the end result. Baby steps! The fact that you’re putting yourself out there consistently will guarantee that you achieve the end goal.

5. If you miss a day, don't beat yourself up, just get back into it the next day. We often fall off the wagon over just one slip up because we are so harsh on ourselves. You may feel like you’ve failed but really, you’ve already won because you started and you tried! Remember that nobody is perfect and you're heading in the right direction. Dust yourself off and keep going!!!

6. Keep a journal to track your progress. It's also handy to keep track of what works and what doesn’t so you can make adjustments along the way. When you look back over it in a few months' time, it will probably give you a bit of a giggle to see how far you’ve come.

7. Once you’ve got one new healthy habit under control, why not add another? By this stage, you’ll be feeling great about yourself (and the fact that you stuck to this new committed version of you), so what better time to add something else into the bargain.

8. Set milestones. Milestones are so important when it comes to helping to keep you accountable and on track. Which brings us to the next point…

9. Celebrate the wins & treat yo’self! When you hit those milestones, reward yourself. This could mean a spa day, a new outfit you’ve had your eye on, new art supplies, new headphones for your run, or even a weekend away – whatever takes your fancy.

Enjoy!
